SUMMARY:Webinar: Oral-Systemic Links: What Do We Tell Our Patients?
DESCRIPTION:Research has been conducted for over 30 years on proposed relationships between periodontal disease and numerous systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, respiratory diseases etc. However\, the nature of these relationships has not always been clearly described or understood resulting in oral health professionals inadvertently giving their patients inaccurate information. As research continues to evolve\, having a clear understanding of the most current state of the evidence for these relationships can play a significant role in educating your patients.\nThere are currently 57 diseases being researched that are suspected of having some form of relationship with periodontal disease. This course will help you to relay accurate information to your patients about the nature of these linkages and how maintenance of periodontal health can have an influence on their overall health. \nCourse Objectives\n1. Discuss some common misconceptions about the nature of relationships between oral and systemic diseases.\n2. Describe the difference between “association” and “causation”.\n3. Discuss the current state of the evidence for proposed associations between periodontal disease and: cardiovascular diseases\, respiratory diseases\, adverse pregnancy outcomes\, diabetes\, rheumatoid arthritis\, cognitive decline\, inflammatory cancers\, and others.\n4. Discuss the most plausible explanation for these associations.\n5. Discuss how maintaining good periodontal health can have a positive influence on overall health.\n6. Develop educational strategies that will help to provide accurate information to your patients regarding oral-systemic relationships. \nSalme E Lavigne\, Dip. DH\, BA\, MSDH\, PhD\nSalme was the founding Director of the dental hygiene program at Confederation College (Thunder Bay\, ON); Associate Professor & Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene at Wichita State University (Wichita\, KS); and Professor & Director\, School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba. Currently\, she holds the title of Senior Scholar at the University of Manitoba and is the Scientific Editor of the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene (CJDH). Salme holds a Diploma in Dental Hygiene (University of Toronto)\, a BA in Biomedical Anthropology (Lakehead University)\, a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education (University of Missouri-Kansas City) and a PhD in Community Health Sciences and Epidemiology (Faculty of Medicine\, University of Manitoba). Salme is the recipient of Alumni of Distinction Awards from the University of Toronto and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry and received the Life Membership Award from the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association. Salme has authored three textbook chapters\, and has over 75 publications in both national and international peer reviewed journals and has delivered over 100 continuing education presentations in Canada\, the US\, Scandinavia\, Holland\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Australia\, China and South Africa. Her research interests lie in periodontics; oral-systemic health connections; and community health. \nRecommended BC CE Categories: C4\, D2\, E2\, E3 \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: Understanding and Implementing Salivary Diagnostics
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about salivary diagnostics and how it can be implemented in your practice? Do you use the latest technology\, such as salivary diagnostics\, to identify risks and improve your patient outcomes? In this discussion with Kerry and Dr. Jim\, we will explore how to use the patient’s health history\, periodontal status\, and assessment information to determine when testing is recommended. Knowing the type and quantity of pathogens present is essential in developing a treatment plan that can reduce their numbers and maintain oral and systemic health. We will also discuss some systemic diseases associated with periodontal pathogenic bacteria and how this information can be conveyed. Oral bacteria tests are smart\, safe\, and simple and can help us identify the hidden oral pathogens that pose a future threat to your client’s oral and systemic health. \nSuggested QA Categories: D1\,D2\,D3\,D6\, E2\,E3 \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nCourse Objectives:\n\nUnderstand how to identify clients who could benefit from bacterial testing based on their health history\, periodontal status\, and other risk factors.\nAcquire knowledge on how microbiology\, periodontology and oral systemic link are connected.\nIdentify high-risk and moderate-risk pathogenic bacteria and their treatment solutions.\nDiscuss how to implement salivary testing in your practice.\nGain knowledge on how to communicate the report findings with your patient.\n\nSpeaker\nKerry Lepicek\, RDH is a registered dental hygienist with more than 20 years of clinical experience. She has worked in various practice settings and currently works part-time in general practice. SUMMARY:Webinar: Returning the Oral Microbiome to a Symbiotic State
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\nThis course discusses the concept of microbial dysbiosis based on the findings\nof the Human Microbiome Project and how the microbes that we live with are\nnot necessarily the culprits we have been lead to believe. How microbes\ninteract with the human immune system is a fine line that can either protect or\nharm the host. A toolbox of strategies will be provided that will help clinicians\nto educate their patients about how to return a dysbiotic microbiome into a state\nof symbiosis. \nObjectives\n1. Discuss findings from the “Human Microbiome Project” and how they relate to the oral microbiome.\n2. Explain the interaction between a dysbiotic microbiome and its relationship to inflammation and periodontitis.\n3. Describe several systemic mediators that play a role in the transition from a healthy symbiotic state to one of disease or dysbiosis.\n4. Discuss how microbial dysbiosis and “Precision Medicine” influenced the development of the new classification of periodontal disease.\n5. Describe various evidence based strategies that will provide clinicians with the tools to assist their patients in reversing their state of dysbiosis back to one of symbiosis.\n6. Use a decision tree that models the concept of “Precision Medicine” to assist you with personalizing your recommendations for each individual patient. SUMMARY:Virtual Study Club 2023/24 — Bugs\, Pus\, and Symbiosis...Oh My! Prof. Penny Hatzimanolakis
DESCRIPTION:Chronic low-grade infections in the mouth elevate systemic inflammation and have an impact on all body systems. The mouth is further linked with the rest of the body when considering the impact of numerous conditions like oral airway\, sleep apnea\, TMD and headaches\, dental caries infections\, periodontal and oral cancer\, to name a few. The understanding of the bidirectional connections is rapidly evolving\, and primary oral healthcare providers and organizations are striving to improve ways to deliver healthcare more efficiently and effectively using current\, evidence-informed methodologies. \nIt is no longer acceptable to minimize or ignore the inflammatory burden and bacterial load that is placed on the overall health of the body by oral diseases. This program will review the current scientific literature on dental diseases and their association with systemic health. The program will support the participant with screening\, approaches and management of oralsystemic connections into clinical practice to achieve comprehensive patient-centred care plans. \nEDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the primary oral-systemic connections\nUnderstand the difference between the health status of Symbiosis or Dysbiosis\nWhat risk indicators/factors play the most significant role in oral and overall health?\nIs there a difference between leaky gut and leaky gums syndrome?\nIntroduce and discuss the various types of oral-systemic health screenings\n\nNot a 2023/24 Virtual Study Club member? Click here to sign up.
