SUMMARY:Virtual Study Club 2023/24 — Bugs\, Pus\, and Symbiosis...Oh My! Prof. Penny Hatzimanolakis
DESCRIPTION:Chronic low-grade infections in the mouth elevate systemic inflammation and have an impact on all body systems. The mouth is further linked with the rest of the body when considering the impact of numerous conditions like oral airway\, sleep apnea\, TMD and headaches\, dental caries infections\, periodontal and oral cancer\, to name a few. The understanding of the bidirectional connections is rapidly evolving\, and primary oral healthcare providers and organizations are striving to improve ways to deliver healthcare more efficiently and effectively using current\, evidence-informed methodologies. \nIt is no longer acceptable to minimize or ignore the inflammatory burden and bacterial load that is placed on the overall health of the body by oral diseases. This program will review the current scientific literature on dental diseases and their association with systemic health. The program will support the participant with screening\, approaches and management of oralsystemic connections into clinical practice to achieve comprehensive patient-centred care plans. \nEDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the primary oral-systemic connections\nUnderstand the difference between the health status of Symbiosis or Dysbiosis\nWhat risk indicators/factors play the most significant role in oral and overall health?\nIs there a difference between leaky gut and leaky gums syndrome?\nIntroduce and discuss the various types of oral-systemic health screenings\n\nNot a 2023/24 Virtual Study Club member? Click here to sign up.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Influencing Health with Oral Probiotics with Lorraine Gambacourt\, RDH (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:The supportive role of Oral Probiotics has been researched for more than 30 years. The introduction of oral probiotics in the maintenance phase of therapy can help to positively influence biofilm repopulation and promote oral microbial balance to improve outcomes of periodontal disease\, halitosis\, caries and more. Could this be the “missing link” to achieving long lasting\, more sustainable health outcomes? \nLearning Objectives \nAs an outcome of this course\, the participant will be able to: \n\nExplain how a healthy oral microbiome is compromised.\nEvaluate the large body of scientific evidence in support of oral probiotics.\nList the specific pathogens that are inhibited by various oral probiotic strains.\nIdentify a particular oral probiotic that can help reduce the incidence of ear and throat infections.\nDifferentiate between the types of oral probiotics available.\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Expanding Our Role — A Focus on Reducing Systemic Risk with Lorraine Gambacourt\, RDH (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Positively influencing oral-systemic health…What does that look like to you? It’s a given that oral health impacts systemic health. Yet\, do we consistently evaluate our current methods of assessment and treatment and introduce changes that can bring about improved\, more sustainable health outcomes? \nA truly valuable and committed Dental Hygienist is never satisfied with the “status quo”. We must continually evolve and expand our knowledge to be able to educate our clients while implementing health strategies and modalities that promote a healthy biofilm\, advance oral health\, and reduce systemic risk. I believe to be effective we must apply a four-stage approach. \nIn this webinar\, I will be touching on some important concepts of the first three stages: \n\nA review of assessment strategies and some of the key risk factors that can significantly affect client outcomes and systemic health.\nWe will explore the concept of biofilm testing using DNA analysis and various modalities that can assist you in your effort to “battle pathogenic biofilm.”\nWe will address chronic inflammation as well as how to educate your client to be an advocate for their own health!\n\nNOTE:  Stage 4 is all about sustaining that improved level of health.  A big part of that involves introducing Oral Probiotics\, so be sure to join in for the May 25th webinar! \nLearning Objectives \n\nExplain the benefits of DNA microbial analysis as a risk assessment tool.\nIdentify methods that help assess disease and aid the client in understanding their condition.\nList several non-invasive treatment modalities that address the bacterial burden\, inflammatory component of PD\, and host response.\nDescribe the value of specific diagnostic tests that can help assess a client’s inflammatory burden.\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Navigating Practice Optimization for Dental Hygiene Practice Owners (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:One way to elevate our practice is by reflecting on how we can improve our practice\, ourselves\, and our client care. We want to do it better. Working smarter\, not harder\, has many benefits. \nWe will examine the science behind Human Factors. \n1. We can heighten clinical performance by understanding the effects of tasks\, equipment\, organization\, communication\, and workplace culture on human behaviour and apply this knowledge to our practice.\n2. We will analyze challenging areas of our practice.\n3. We will identify strategies and solutions to improve each client interaction with increased proficiency. We are all looking for innovative and efficient ways to accomplish our day. Navigating practice optimization will encompass evidence-based research\, organizational techniques\, a variety of products\, and practical solutions\, including my experiences and tips to make your day easier. \nLearning objectives\n• Identify current stressors in our practice\n• Examine how human factors affect our mental health and professional performance\n• Evaluate my practice in four areas: organization\, environment\, communication\, self-care\n• Understand the importance of solutions to elevate client care and our mental health\n• Investigate techniques and tools using case studies to support and change my practice • Implement changes to provide safe and proficient care in our practice \nClick here to register
